:::General Q&A:::
What is imp?
imp is a new digital media service, powered by a media player that directly connects artists, fans, and organizations with music, videos, and each other. imp cuts through the clutter of the digital age by enabling users to receive new media legally from trusted sources like cultural publications, artists, and friends.
How does imp distribute content?
imp uses a cutting edge distribution model known as BitTorrent.
How do people get imp?
imp is available for a free download at www.poweredbyimp.com and through links on partner websites.
What is an account, and why do I have to have one?
imp, ensures that users receive legally licensed content, whether it is promotional or purchased. Your initial account is anonymous, but when you subscribe to a (Taster) digital compilation delivery or purchase media, we ask that you provide your email address and create a password for login.
What does it cost to have an account?
Some accounts are free, and some are paid subscriptions. Prices may vary, but are always clearly stated.
Why does imp use a peer-to-peer network rather than traditional, server-based one?
Because imp promotes media through distribution of Tasters, we needed a faster way to distribute large amounts of content. Through a new system called BitTorrent, everyone on our network hosts a little bit of the total content and then we're able to distribute it very quickly. BitTorrent inverts the traditional issue of more users making a system run more slowly, because not everyone is coming to one place to get the same information. In fact, the more users sharing content, the faster you get the content you want. In short, we control what files are in the system, and our users help distribute them.
How is imp different than other peer-to-peer networks?
imp is a controlled environment. Though users help each other gain access to content by sharing, initial content comes from us to ensure quality and licenses are obtained before content is delivered.
Where did imp come from?
imp was created by InRadio, a promoter of independent music and ideas. InRadio was founded in 2002 to produce and distributes bi-monthly subscription-based CD compilations of independent music. Our mission is to better distribute the world's media. Over the lasts three years, we have connected tens of thousands of listeners with great artists like Andrew Bird, Calexico, Corey Harris, Eleni Mandell, Enon, Heiruspecs, Josh Ritter, Josh Rouse, Low, M. Ward, Of Montreal, Out Hud, Pedro the Lion, Rilo Kiley, RJD2, Seu Jorge, The Decemberists, The Wrens, and Vic Chesnutt.
How do I control download?
By default, Taster download starts automatically when the player starts up.

:::About the Taster:::
What is a "Taster"?
A "Taster" is a compendium of media filtered by our trusted partner organizations. A single "Taster" could feature songs, movie clips, PDFs and podcasts. Our Partner Organizations spend time browsing the stacks so you don't have to. When you subscribe to a "Taster" your player will automatically get new editions of the "Taster" as soon as it becomes available.
How do I set Bandwidth available for use?
Settable options for downloading are found in Tools, Config, Network. Options include bandwidth limits and controls for manual rather than automatic downloads. Download can be interrupted by closing the player application, by closing your network connection or by setting bandwidth options to zero.
How do I subscribe?
Click the subscribe button. If you're online, a browser window will open and ask you to set up an account with user name and password. In addition, if the subscription has a price, you'll be asked for credit card data for payment.
Why do some Tasters cost money while others are free?
Some Tasters are sponsored by organizations for free distribution to their audience, and some Tasters include advertising to cover the costs of production and distribution.
What happens when I click on the "Track" symbol?
Click the Track symbol when you want to see what else is available from an artist. After clicking it, click the "Tracker" tab to see the list of available tracks from that artist.
How do I play a video file in the Taster? Why can't I play a video file?
Double-clicking the file will start QuickTime and open the file. If you don't have QuickTime, you'll be prompted to download it.
How do I play a PDF file in the Taster?
Double-clicking the file will start Adobe PDF reader and open the file. If you don't have Adobe PDF reader, you'll be prompted to download it.
Can I get my money back when I cancel a paid-for Taster?
This is dependent on the Taster-provider. You will need to contact that organization.
How large is a whole Taster?
Tasters vary in size, but most are between 60 and 120 megabytes.
How can I delete a track from a Taster?
Right click on it, and you'll see that you cannot delete a track from the taster (no options appear). However, if you open the Library, right click on the track there, and select "Remove Songs" the track will be removed from your Library and Taster.
Why can't I re-sort a Taster by other columns/fields?
The Taster order was designed by our partner organization. You can sort, re-order, and search the media in your library.

:::Troubleshooting:::
Why doesn't an audio file play when I click on it?
Possible reasons include:
* The file has not yet completed downloading (through your internet connection).
* There may be a hardware issue. Audio output may be set very low, or muted, or speakers may be disconnected or headset plugged in, but not in use.
* File has been corrupted or removed. Check the Library to see if the title is there; it should be, because each Taster track is automatically added to the Library at completion of track download.
